Grandma Hannah Part 2 - Egham

Sometime between the births of Hannah’s third and fourth children (Charles in 1851 and Samuel in 1854), Charles and Hannah moved their family to Egham.

Egham is a village that is roughly a 40-minute journey (about 20 miles) by train west from London, in the county of Surrey. This map (stolen from the wiki) shows the location of Surrey in England:

I rode around the village on my bicycle taking photos of buildings that seemed old enough to have been around at the time Grandma Hannah and Grandpa Charles lived there. There weren’t many; most developments seemed to be recent…

To the west of Egham, there is a large park, Windsor Great Park. Windsor Castle itself is north of the Great Park; the castle grounds are practically a stone’s throw from Egham! In the 1850’s the queen was Victoria. Prince Albert did a lot to develop Windsor Great Park during that time. Interestingly, Prince Albert passed away in 1861, the same year Hannah was admitted to Pekham House.

Here is a taste of Windsor Great Park at the corner closest to Egham:

Here is a picture that I took in June 2008 of the “Long Walk” to Windsor Castle, in the north end of the same park:

So without knowing it, Wayne, Kathy, and Danny were that close to Hannah and Charles’ old home in Egham, when we visited Windsor that day in 2008.
